Why You Shouldn't Avoid Oils

Most of us, especially people with oilier skin will do anything to avoid using oil as part of their skin care routine.   Unfortunately, oils have gotten a bad rap.  Oils, or what we usually refer to as lipids when discussing skin, create a barrier protecting your skin against the elements.  Damage to this barrier occurs daily, so maintaining an effective barrier requires a continuous application of products containing lipids. For example when oils are applied on the skin it prevents dehydration not only at the surface but at the deeper levels of the skin.  In addition, lipids increase the water resistance of the skin which is quite important as it obstructs water-soluble pollutants from penetrating into the skin.  Moisture loss may result in dry, scaly or even cracked skin, bacteria-related acne, eczema, rosacea-type inflammation, atopic dermatitis and/or skin congestion, among other problems. Lipids also help to soften the skin, to smooth it and to provide elasticity. The crucial aspect should always be the support of the natural skin regeneration.  There are many different oils on the market.  And though all oils will create this important barrier, not all oils are necessarily beneficial to the skin such as mineral oil, which is a petroleum based oil.  Different oils have different benefits and are appropriate for different skin types.  Therefore when I am mixing a serum for oily skin I would not use the same carrier oil that I would use on dry skin.  Speaking of dry skin, many people with dry skin feel they need very thick heavy moisturizers.  Again, this is not the case.  It is the oils, butters and extracts that are in the moisturizer that are going to improve your skin.  Generally, most moisturizers are thickened with gums and waxes which are not bad for your skin but do little if nothing to moisturize your skin.

So put those fears aside, try a serum or body oil you will be so happy you did.

Six Month Anniversary

It seemed fitting at the six month anniversary of the opening of Renew Botanicals Skin Care Studio and Wellness Boutique that I start blogging again.  Yes, it has been six months and what a six months it has been.  Setting up the new skin care studio was a snap since I have been doing it for 23 years,  but setting up the new wellness boutique was new for me.  I had a blank canvas to work which presented so many great opportunities.  Lots of blank white walls gave me the idea of showcasing a different local artist every month.  Getting to work making my organic toxic free products took up a good deal of time but what fun it was mixing and creating new skin and body products.  I expanded my aromatherapy and herbal practice and have quite a nice apothecary right here in the shop.  Then there was the search for artisans who make products that I don't.  They all had to meet my strict criteria of safe non toxic ingredients.  Not only did I find wonderful products to carry but I have met the most wonderful people:  Marie from Unearth Malee Soaps who creates palm oil free organic soaps, Robyn from Shear Miracles Organic Hair Care (my hair never looked so good) and Frances from Petal Pushers who makes the most amazing organic deodorants.

As summer turned to fall I started to settle in and  now we are winding up the busy holiday season.  I look forward to the new year and keeping you all up-to-date on tips for skin care, aromatherapy, herbs and more.

Expansion Update

The renovations are coming along as you can see by the photo.  By the time you read this the window will have been installed and they will begin working on the interior.

In the meantime I have been very busy making many of the products that will be available in the store.  I have also been researching regionally-made products by other artisans to carry in the shop such as soaps, hair care and much more.  The new labels have been designed and are at the printers.  I look forward to bringing you a beautiful store where you can purchase all your personal care products knowing they are safe for you and your family.

To accomplish everything, I have been encouraged by other small business owners to try a new type of fund-raising and friend-raising by creating a crowdfunding campaign.

Please take the time to watch the video, to read the info on the page, and to share it with your friends and anyone who might be interested too. I appreciate whatever you can do to help me get ReNew Botanicals up and running.

A VERY BIG ANNOUNCEMENT

I am very excited to announce that sometime in early June, ReNew Organic Skin Care will become RENEW BOTANICALS  Skin Care Studio and Wellness Boutique .  But that is not all, I will be moving to Hamilton.  The Hamilton Lauraville Mainstreet Association has acquired the old firehouse on Hamilton Avenue to help businesses get started.  Get started, you may ask?  But you are already a business.  Yes, for many years I have been providing you with my organic vegan skin care treatments and products by appointment only.  Also during this time I have been making my products in my home which has been a challenge.  The new business will be a retail store in addition to my treatment room and now I will be able to have my workshop under the same roof.  With a retail location, open 5 days a week, you will be able  purchase your products when ever it is convenient for you, no longer having to make an appointment.   As many of you know I have been wanting to expand my line to include more therapeutic products such as my aromatherapy blends, healing salves, teas and more but this has not been feasible given the limited space and limited public access.  Now I will be able to.  I will continue to offer customized handcrafted skin care products and will also offer a line a ready made handcrafted skin care products for adults and my baby line Baby Botanicals.  Besides my products I plan on carrying handcrafted products made by other local artisans( from the region) such as soaps, body butters, hair care and more.  In the future I hope to have classes and lectures and bring specialists in such as massage therapist, acupuncturists, Ayurveda practitioners and much more .   As part of this new name and move I will be giving my logo and website a fresh new look to better represent ReNew Botanicals  (below is a preview of my new logo design).  Rest assured I will be offering the same treatments you have been getting and I will be adding a few new ones.   And guess what?  There is free parking close by.

Baby Botanical has Arrived

I am pleased to announce the arrival of my new line, Baby Botanicals.  I created this line because I feel there is nothing more important than what you use on your baby.   I use only natural and the finest certified organic and fair trade ingredients; I never use any sulfates, parabens, phthalates, petrochemicals, synthetic fragrance or artificial colors and they are never tested on animals .  There are no lotions or creams in the Baby Botanicals line because those products contain water and require preservatives.  Only a few the products contain essential oils and when I do, I only use lavender, chamomile, red mandarin and tea tree, very well diluted because research shows these are the only essential oils safe for babies under one year old. Gentle, soothing and calming, without compromise to the environment, we are sure that you will and your baby will love these products lovingly made with botanical goodness.

Soothing Bath Tea Wash (for all ages).

Infants generally do not need to be washed with soap so this gentle herbal natural cleansing blend was  created for your newborn.  It is perfect for calming and comforting the crankiest babies before bed or naptime.  In addition it is the perfect soak for children and adults to soothe itchy, irritated dry skin.

Baby Wash and Shampoo  (Ages 6 months and up)

This 100% natural bath wash and shampoo is made from certified organic coconut, olive and jojoba oils and is the perfect alternative to the detergent chemical formulas in common use today.  Lightly scented with organic essential oils of chamomile, lavender and red mandarin that calm and soothe.

Baby Powder (all ages, safe for newborns)

Our herbal baby powder is talc and cornstarch free. Studies have shown that talc can cause certain cancers and yeast feeds on cornstarch which can contribute to diaper rash and inflammation.  You can use our non-toxic baby powder with peace of mind and let the gentle aroma of chamomile and lavender calm your baby while herbs of marshmallow root and myrrh protect your baby from diaper rash. Use at diaper changes or anytime.

Diaper Balm

This cloth diaper safe diaper balm safely combats existing diaper rash and helps prevent future rashes.  Made with a blend of antifungal and antibacterial herbs, shea butter and mango butter and just a touch of organic tea tree oil, this balm will not only soothe and heal diaper rash but is great for all insect bites, scrapes, cradle cap or as an all over moisturizer.

Massage and Baby Oil (safe for newborns)

Massage is a pleasurable way to develop trust and intimacy with your baby and strengthen the bond between the two of you.  A combination of organic jojoba, apricot kernel oil and organic sunflower infused with organic herbs of chamomile, lavender and calendula is the perfect multi purpose oil to help calm a cranky baby, after bathing  moisturizing for sensitive and dry skin and for cradle cap.

Baby Body Butter (newborns and all ages)

This ultra rich butter was created to moisturizer the driest skin and for conditions such as eczema.  Unlike lotions and creams it contains no water or emulsifiers therefore needing no preservatives.  Contains only the natural and organic butters, virgin coconut oil and sunflower oil infused with soothing herbs and a small amount of chamomile, lavender and red mandarin organic essential oils to help soothe and calm the crankiest babies and children.

Suppliers

As a small business owner and crafter of my own skin and body care line I often have people starting out in the business asking me where to get supplies.  Many of you are using essential oils more and more and as I have posted previously it is so important to make sure you are getting the highest quality essential oils with the correct information on how to use these oils.  So here is a review of some of my favorite suppliers:

Appalachian Valley Natural Products for essential oil.  I have been using this source for years.  They have a large assortment of oils at a very affordable price.  The quality is excellent with good customer service.  www.av-at.com

Nature's Gift for essential oils and other supplies.  I found Nature's Gift when AVNP was out of some oils I needed right away.  They have a wider variety of oils especially absolutes for making perfumes.  They are a little more expensive but the quality is excellent and a broader selection.  Marge Clark the owner is a wealth of knowledge on essential oils and there use and her website reflects this.  She is also very willing to share her knowledge and replies to all inquiries in a timely manner.  www.naturesgift.com

It is very very important to label all your supplies and products even if they are for home use.  There is nothing worse then forgetting what you put in a particular jar or bottle.  Even more important is knowing when you made that product.  Of course if you are going to sell your products you must have all the appropriate information on the label that the FDA requires.  If you are making your own labels there is no better place to purchase your labels than from OnlineLabels.com.  I have been purchasing my labels from them for quite a few years now.  You will not get better customer service anywhere.  There assortment is vast whether you need labels for an inkjet or laser printer, waterproof or plain labels, they even have colored labels and different shape labels.  If you are unsure they are happy to send you samples.  www.onlinelabels.com

And last but not least you need a supplier for your jars and bottles.  For those of you who do not want to buy in bulk but need wholesale pricing  I highly recommend Sunburst Bottles.  www.sunburstbottle.com.

I hope these suggestions help.  Happy crafting.
